Why 440 Hz became the standard tuning
Modern music is built around A=440 Hz, but that number is more recent and more accidental than people assume. Here is how concert pitch drifted for centuries, why the world finally agreed on one anchor, and what that says about 432 Hz.
Almost every recording you have ever heard is tuned to A4 = 440 Hz. It feels permanent, like a law of music. It is not. For most of musical history there was no shared tuning at all, and the 440 standard only locked in within living memory of the 20th century. Understanding how it happened makes both 440 and 432 a lot easier to think about clearly.
For centuries concert pitch drifted from city to city with no agreed value. Centuries with no standard
Before modern standardisation, the pitch of A varied widely. Different cities, churches, courts and instrument makers used noticeably different references, and they shifted over time too. This worked because music was mostly local and live. An ensemble simply tuned to itself or to the local organ. The lack of a standard was not a bug, it was just not a problem yet.
The drift upward
Over the 18th and 19th centuries, concert pitch in many places crept higher. Brighter, more brilliant sound was fashionable, and pushing the reference up gave orchestras extra edge and carrying power. But the drift created strain. Singers struggled as pitch climbed, and instruments built for one pitch sounded wrong at another. Various attempts were made to rein it in, including a 19th-century French standard that set A near 435 Hz to halt the upward creep.
So even before 440, the problem was already recognised: without a shared number, pitch wandered, and that wandering hurt singers and complicated instrument building. The pressure for one agreed reference was building.
Why technology forced the issue
The thing that turned a nuisance into a necessity was technology. Three changes made a single standard genuinely important:
- Recording. Once a performance was fixed on a record, it would be played alongside others. Mismatched references became audible and awkward.
- Broadcast radio. Pitch from one studio now reached listeners and musicians everywhere, who might play along.
- International touring and trade. Orchestras travelled and instruments were sold worldwide, so a clarinet from one country had to match an orchestra in another.

The road to 440
440 Hz emerged as the compromise candidate through the early 20th century. It was promoted at international meetings, adopted by major broadcasters and instrument makers, and gradually became the de facto reference. An international conference in 1939 recommended 440 Hz, and after the interruption of the war it was formalised as an international standard in 1955, later reaffirmed by the relevant standards body. That 1955 agreement is the moment 440 became the official global anchor.
Notice what the decision was about. It was a negotiation to pick a single workable number that most parties could live with, somewhere in the middle of the range pitch had drifted across. It was not a study concluding that 440 is the most beautiful or healthiest pitch. No such finding exists. It was coordination, plain and simple.
What 440 replaced, and what it left behind
It is worth being concrete about how much variety 440 swept aside. Period instruments and archival pitch references show that, across different times and places, the note A sat anywhere from well below today's value to clearly above it. A choir in one tradition, an opera house in another and a village organ in a third could each have a different idea of where A lived. Music written for a particular local pitch sounded subtly different when performed elsewhere.

Ensembles performing baroque repertoire often tune near A=415 Hz, roughly a semitone below modern pitch, because it is closer to what some of that music was written for. Far from being fringe, this is mainstream practice in period-instrument performance. Why a single number, and not a range
You might ask why the world settled on one exact figure rather than an accepted band. The answer is interoperability. A fixed reference lets a factory build clarinets, oboes and flutes that will all play in tune with any orchestra, anywhere, straight out of the case. It lets a recording made in one country sit alongside one made in another without a clash. It lets broadcast equipment, electronic tuners and digital instruments share a default that just works. A range would reintroduce exactly the ambiguity standardisation was meant to remove. This is also why orchestras that tune a hair above 440, often to 442 or 443 Hz for a touch more brilliance, do not undermine the standard. They still start from a shared anchor and agree among themselves on a small, deliberate offset. The standard gives them a common reference point to vary from. The conspiracy theory, briefly
You will run into a story that 440 Hz was deliberately imposed to disturb or control people. There is no credible historical evidence for this. Standards are conventions, not verdicts
The deepest lesson in this history is about what a standard actually is. A standard is an agreement that something will be done one way so that everyone can work together, not a finding that the chosen way is the best possible. They are useful precisely because they are fixed and shared, and their value comes from agreement rather than from being uniquely correct. A4 = 440 Hz belongs to that family. That framing dissolves a lot of needless argument. People sometimes treat picking 432 Hz as defying a scientific result, or treat sticking with 440 Hz as accepting one. Neither is true. There is no scientific result to defy or accept here, only a convention chosen for practical reasons. Once you see 440 as a shared anchor rather than a verdict on beauty, both tunings become ordinary choices, and the only meaningful question left is which one you would rather listen to.
What this means for 432 Hz
